We're Hiring - Director, Drop-Inn
We are seeking a committed individual with relevant experience and skills to provide leadership to our weekly Drop-Inn Program.
Cummer Avenue United Church (CAUC) is a vibrant, affirming, Christian community seeking to provide a safe and nurturing environment in which people from all circumstances, especially those who are struggling, isolated, under-housed or hungry, are able to rest and be taken care of. To this end, CAUC has for many years provided a “Drop Inn” program one day each week offering a warm place to stay, light breakfast, full, hot lunch and other support opportunities.
We are seeking a committed individual with relevant experience and skills to provide leadership to CAUC’s Drop Inn Program.
LOCATION/SCHEDULE
The Drop Inn program has operated from the CAUC building at 53 Cummer Avenue in Willowdale. The building is being renovated and during the renovation the Drop Inn operates from Willowdale Baptist Church located on Olive Avenue near Finch and Yonge Street. The program is held each Wednesday with volunteers commencing work at about 6:30 am and closing about 2:30 pm.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Drop Inn Program Director is responsible for the management of all aspects of the program safely and efficiently including menu planning, food assembly and preparation, volunteer coordination and supervision. Additionally, the Director is expected to seek out opportunities for donations and grants, make appropriate applications and do any required reporting and follow-up.
QUALIFICATIONS
CAUC is seeking an individual with the following qualifications:
Knowledge and experience managing an “out-of-the-cold”, drop-in program serving guest communities faced with poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, isolation or other social, emotional and health related issues;
Demonstrated understanding of, sensitivity to and respect for diverse cultures, socio-economic backgrounds and ethnicities;
Demonstrated experience managing and motivating volunteers;
Strong organizational skills, particularly time management and responsiveness to the demands of sometimes stressful client situations;
Ability to work independently initiating changes and improvements to the program as needed;
In possession of, or able to complete, a food handling certificate as required by public health regulations;
Recognition that this position has physical demands such as lifting, carrying, food preparation, cleaning, cooking;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with external service providers, potential funders and government agencies;
Relevant postsecondary education would be an asset.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Major responsibilities of this position include:
Safe and efficient management of the Drop Inn program including kitchen operations, volunteer supervision, security and safety of volunteers and guests;
On-site attendance each Wednesday approximately 6:00 am to 2:30 pm;
Administration of the program including financial management, regulatory compliance, preparation of written reports as required;
Preparation of menus, ordering and purchase of food products, supervision of food preparation and delivery;
Supervision, recruitment and retention of volunteers
Effective liaison with external service providers, health and social service agencies, church staff and clergy;
Health and safety of volunteers and guests is a primary responsibility of this position;
Capacity to envision future Drop Inn program needs, opportunities and innovations to ensure the program remains relevant, effective in serving its client community.
COMPENSATION
This Position is part-time, 15 hours per week. The 2019 wage is $21/hour. The person filling the position is eligible to participate in United Church of Canada health and benefit programs.
